1, People. Purpose makes a great recruiter.
It will help you find people who believe in what you are doing, and in the change, you are making. Stress doesn’t come from working hard. It comes from having people on the team who don’t care.
Purpose is a great recruiter of great people. It’s a sieve. A magnate. It’s a lure for the driven and the passionate. It weeds out the lazy and the indifferent.
Let me say this, working with great people to help build a business that is making change happen will provide you with some of the best days and nights of your life. These moments matter. They are the moments.
2. Time. Purpose provides focus.
Purpose protects your time. Your time is limited. But the opportunities that come our way each day are not. But purpose provides a discipline to hold your time in the highest regard.
You have to make ‘No’ your default setting. You have to protect your time so that you keep it for the thing that matters most.
Time is precious. Energy is limited. The decision of how you use your time today will be the biggest decision you will make today. Until tomorrow.
Purpose keeps your main thing the main thing.
3, Energy. Purpose optimises it.
Going home tired as hell is not a bad feeling. In fact, it can be one of the best feelings in the world. The feeling you must seek to avoid is where there is no feeling at all. Where you are just ticking a box. Going through the motions. On auto-pilot.
The most important job you will ever have is to find the thing that matters to you most. That thing that makes you feel alive.
So you core energy is being put into something that you simply can’t hold back on. Because it is just too important to you. This is when your energy is best used. Nothing wasted. Nothing spared. Everything used toward forward motion.
Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.
4, Grit. Purpose makes you tough.
That steel backbone comes from somewhere. And it comes from having a goal that is bigger than satisfying your own personal needs. When the ego has been crushed, and the only thing that matters is achieving the goal, that makes you collectively stronger.
Then what you are doing is important work. There will be days that test you, but you will find the strength that you never knew you had to be more than equal to the test you are faced with.
If you want to run a marathon, knowing why matters. Especially around 18 miles in. If you want to lose weight, knowing why matters. Especially, after Christmas dinner and the chocolates are brought out.
The inner strength comes from doing something important to you.
5, Teams. Purpose brings individuals together.
A firefly gathers around a bright light. People, especially the driven ones, gather around the change a company can make. Purpose brings together the misfits, the difficult, the unlikely and forms a team that is greater than the sum of each individual.
Egos are discarded, personal rivalries are put to one side, this is a rare moment when a group of people comes together to do something so innovative, so beautiful, so rare, that it will be considered by all in the team to be the best work they have ever done.
Purpose gives meaning to why the team wants to win.
